Asterhaven — Privacy Policy

Last updated 1 September 2026

Asterhaven is a small online game run by one person. This page says plainly what the game records, why, and how to get rid of it. It describes what the software actually does, not what it might do one day.

What you have to give us

A character name and a password. That is all. No email address, phone number, real name, date of birth or payment details are asked for or stored. Your password is kept only as a scrypt hash and is never stored in a form anyone can read, including us.

Because we hold no email address, a lost password cannot be recovered or reset by us. Please pick one you will remember.

What the game stores about your character

Diagnostics

So the game can be debugged and balanced, the server keeps a log containing:

This is tied to a character name, which is a name you invented, not your identity.

Things you say

Chat is not written to the diagnostics log. There is one deliberate exception: the town watch character in Asterhaven remembers players he has met — their character name and how many times he has seen them — and keeps a short buffer of things said aloud in the room he is standing in, so he can mention them later. Those lines are stored without a speaker attached and are discarded after 24 hours.

Private messages are never recorded. Anything sent with tell is excluded from this by design, and so is anything said in a room he is not in.

Server logs

Like any website, the web server keeps standard access logs, which include the IP address a request came from. These are used for security and troubleshooting. Your IP address is not stored in the game's own data or attached to your character.

What we do not do

Deleting everything

You can destroy your character yourself, at any time, from inside the game. It is immediate and permanent: the character file is removed, belongings are destroyed, any house deed is released, and the town watch forgets your name. It cannot be undone and we cannot restore it.

Full instructions, and a way to ask if you cannot sign in, are on the account deletion page.

Children

Asterhaven is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Since we collect no identifying information at all, we have no way to determine a player's age.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
